Why You Should Have a Link Building Strategy

Posted on August 20th, 2007 in General, Offsite SEO by Dan

The way I look at it, you have two ways that you can go about building links to your site: following a plan or doing it haphazardly. Which do you think works better? Speaking from experience, the planned way is a lot more effective!

Why to Have a Plan

Yes, its very cliche, but there’s something about these cliche statements: they is usually some good truth to them! So here’s the cliche statement for today: if you fail to plan you plan to fail.

If you go about your link building very haphazardly you’ll get some work done, but not as much as you would with some sort of a plan. It doesn’t really matter what you plan is, just make sure you have one so that you make the most of your time.

Link building can be a very monotonous exercise (especially for things like directories). So keep the big picture in mind and develop a plan.

What Makes a Good Plan

I don’t believe that there is any one perfect way to do it. So here’s the basic idea of what I do: I just do a different technique each day to give myself variety. For example, Mondays I mainly focus on blogs, Tuesdays I work on an article or two, Wednesday I do directories, etc. I will modify this from time to time, and on some weeks I have to make little adjustments. For the most part though, I will try to stick to this type of a schedule.

When you first get going, any plan is better than no plan. Maybe your plan is that you’re going to spend 3 hours on Saturday. Great! Now decide what you’re going to get done in those 3 hours and you have a plan!

Once you have your plan the next step is simple: work that plan! As you work your plan you may find that it is not as effective as you may have thought. That’s ok, make some adjustments and keep going.

How about forum? have you join forum?
Honestly I do not really make a plan like you. but I do record which website I already have a link. So I will not flood the website.

When do linking, I will take a look at the website carefully, If the website is bellow criteria of my linking strategy, I will not make a link. One of criteria could be the website PageRank.

    Hi Ruri,

Forums are also a good way to build links. I was mainly giving some examples of a strategy you could follow. As mentioned, I don’t believe there is any one perfect plan, but it sounds like you have a plan and a way to record it that is working for you. Thanks for sharing some of your ideas!

I do directories daily but haven’t really concentrated on articles for a while, perhaps I should give them another shot. But you definitely need a plan and to stick to it because although link building is important it is also very boring…

    Chamonix,
Yes, it is a very boring exercise most of the time. That’s one reason why you should do different techniques - it adds some variety to this otherwise mundane task!

I definitely think everyone should have some type of strategy. And I agree with Dan in the importance of varying the types of techniques you use. It’s always a good idea to diversify the types of links you get to point to your site.

Amm… I think that the major link should be from a plan. But you should still get the random links

I just started link building. Man! is it boring. I was really hoping you would have a suggestion that would bring some excitement to the mundane this task . One thing your article did do, it made me realize that my current system of mixing it up is pretty common.

Yes, it can be very very boring. You almost have to make a game out of it. Also, I always have some good music to keep me company as well.

Sticking on a plan in a link building strategy may work for some and not for others. There are just so many developments and break through every day, that the more I read about what other people have done so far, the more I want to experiment.
