What is Your Motivation?
Ok, I admit that money is a great motivator. But I also know that if money is your only motivation, you probably won’t stay motivated too long.
I’m a big believer that you have to be able to see more than just the dollar signs. What I’ve found is that when the going gets rough (or boring
), you need to be able to rely on something else. That’s one reason why I also believe that you should have other things that you are striving for that give your business and life meaning.
Maybe it’s a trip to Hawaii, maybe it’s being able to pay off the debt that you have. Whatever it is, try to find a bigger cause than just the money.
Money can do a lot of things for you. It can talk care of a lot of the troubles that you have. But in the end it is just paper. Think more about what you can do with it. How can you enrich your life or the life of loved ones. What really motivates you?
I think it’s worth your time to sit down and figure this one out. I’ve worked with a lot of people to help them get their new businesses set up. And one thing that I’ve found is that the ones that always tell me “I just gotta make more money” are the ones that also get the most frustrated when it doesn’t happen overnight. Having a good, solid internet business is not an overnight project. It’s going to take work. So find yourself a good motivator. You’ll be glad that you did!

You know, you have a very valid point about money as not the only thing that motivates. It’s true that most people who have this as an only motivation gets frustrated. Money doesn’t grow on trees, so patience is a virtue in any business. Thanks for this!

I agree that it is beneficial for someone to have other motivational factors driving them besides money. however, those ‘other’ factors you mentioned such as trip to hawaii or eliminating debt, you need money to do those. So indirectly money is still the underlying motive. A better example would have been the pride you feel when you finish a project; finishing it for the sake of finishing it not the monetary reward.

Gorilla Trades,
Good point. I would agree that those factors really can be a good motivator as well. Thanks for the comment!
[Reply]
Well, yeah, I would agree with you guys. Money is indeed the common denominator when we talk about motivation. I was supposed to say my family is my greatest motivation, it still boils down to having money to be able to satisfy their needs and wants.
[Reply]
I agree that you need more than money to get you through those rough spots - but like Gorilla said - indirectly, it always comes back to money. For me, its a lifestyle thing. If I dont want to go to work for someone else every day, I need to work hard on my web projects. Its not the money specifically that I’m after, its the freedom that the money brings. I’ve found that to be a far stronger motivator than dollars and cents alone.

I think being happy is my biggest motivation. What makes me happy, well one thing that makes me happy is Making Money.

Words well spoken… money is fine and dandy but if you are just doing it to add up the numbers in your bank account, it doesn’t quite mean as much.

Happy the man who has found his vocation, rather than just a job.

I’m motivated by a desire to succeed. Money is a part of that but for me isn’t the primary part. I’m happier when I’m accomplishing things and being productive, regardless of the impact on my wallet.
[Reply]
My main motivation is to succeed as well. The challenges of my job constantly propel me to come back to work. Once you have enough money to live and buy the things you “need”, money as a motivation dies, I agree. That is why the means to make money and how you allocate it after is far more important than the paper itself.
[Reply]
Well said..I agree but there are more things which drives your motivation. I think your innerself is satisfied when you have balance of support of family, friends, professional work life. Money is accelerator to satisfy needs and express yourself. It is a big stress buster as well..I would always believe”Do your best and strive for the excellent.”

It is a great thing to always have a goal, no matter what size. It is easy to lose focus when things get boring or hard. Thanks for the reminder. I agree that money should be the result, but you should have back up plans to keep you going.

Money is a great motivator, but how cool is it that anyone can basically set up a really simple business online? This is a good or bad thing depending if you got scammed. But for most of us, this is the closest that we will live out our dreams as entrepreneurs. We’re motivated because it’s our baby and we want to see it grow. There’s a sense of pride that you can’t get when working for someone else.

Money is probably my greatest motivation besides to keep my wife happy. =)

i think money is everyone’s motivation and this is what everyone in the world is doing as soon as the money and exchange system was applied i realy like the way you clarify that after all having a lot of value money still remain a piece of papers and cant buy you everything i totally agree

My motivation is always to make a difference for the people I meet. I feel that if I can touch a person in way that no one has I have achieved something.
In the end money is something that is needed for a person to survive and keep fighting for the dream. Money is the fuel and your dream is the key.

Money is a major motivating factor for anybody these days… Especially with the economy in the shape that it’s in and prices for everything on a continual rise. Money is what keeps you ahead of the curve.
But at the end of the day, you have to be happy. If you’re not happy with your life & job and what you do on a daily basis…. then how are you going to be motivated to improving your life?

I just love my work as an entrepreneur. Have created two well-running businesses by now. One with VC and I sold it. I have never been proud of the product and so I am glad that I don’t do that anymore. The other one makes me very happy because it is a lovely product that everybody loves. It’s honest and fairly priced and when I get to know people at the bar, there’s a good chance people in my town know it and get all excited and tell me how cool it is and maybe buy me a drink. I find that very rewarding.

I am very agree with that :if money is your only motivation, you probably won’t stay motivated too long.

It’s true that money is a lot of people’s motivation, but it definately shouldn’t be the only one. It’s not even that enjoyable! However, the money should be used towards other motivations, like that holiday you mentioned, etc.
[Reply]
I also agree that money shouldn’t be your only motivation. There will be slow times and money wouldn’t be coming in. If that happens, how would you motivate yourself to go on?
A good motivation is the opportunity to learn new things each day. Even with failures, you learn something. I’d like to share this with you:

Everybody is motivated to do something. Some people are motivated to just lie on the couch and eat ice cream. Let’s face it: We have all heard that if we just try hard enough, we can do anything. The problem is we don’t all have the willingness to put forth the extra effort. In fact, we seem to have a consistent unwillingness to be willing — and it takes a high level of motivation to achieve that lack of drive! Having said all that, is it possible that we have willingness that is blocked by a belief? Could we be working very hard to motivate ourselves into doing something we think can’t be done? Ask this question of yourself or of your staff: What is it that I believe strongly that may not be true?
Look for the answer to that question and you may find out why the merger is not working, why the sales force cannot hit their targets, and why you keep thinking about a new career.

I completely agree that money is one of the main motivator but there are many more things that motivates you and accomplishing a goal is another reason.
Thanks for sharing.

I think money motivation is important but people want to have money because it makes their life easier in some way- You can use the money to go on vacation or if you have enough you can quit your job- Money should not be the key in your motivation strategy. Try focusing on the types of things that you will be able to do with more cash- you may be able to focus and stay on track with your goals better- you can then try to apply these thoughts and look for other ways to achieve these same goals- example having more money i can spending more time with family-for free you can wake up earlier and drink coffee with your wife or eat breakfast with your kids. this does not cost anything- then when you have all kinds of cash you can have your butler make the breakfast and just focus on relaxation with your family-

I feel if money is given importance then you got to leave everything aside family friends relatives and you are left alone. Money is necessary but for everything there is a limit and if you cross those limits then there is no meaning in life. What motivates me is that I am self employed and am able to support myself in my own pace. Thank you for this wonderful article.

Great post as I think people strive for money but aren’t sure for what real world purpose and then when they get they feel empty as they had no clear reason or goal for trying to obtain it!

One of the best ways to accomplish your goals in life is to motivate yourself to take action. Useful habits can increase your effectiveness immensely. One of the best traits to develop is the Do It Now habit. This can get you started on a task even when you don’t feel like working.
You probably should start with small, everyday tasks. After you have developed this habit using easy tasks, you can gradually increase the difficulty of these tasks. But remember, after giving the Do It Now command, you must always carry through with immediate action.

It’s true, you gotta have a grand plan. Money is only a means to an end, and a desire for money usually is a mask for a deeper desire. Go deep within and find out what it is that you really aspire to. Sometimes you can go to it more directly.

As I said on the runescape accounts: RangePsyco, I’ve played this game for 7 years, and it is still a game I’d recommend for those who are just starting their. There are many helpful players, and many. Not so helpful, players. You have the option to make friends, trade, assist, rs gold sell
and participate in many events that happen each year. There’s alot of story expansion and things to do, but it takes some commitment to get into the nitty-gritty. If you have any questions relating to RuneScape, feel free to contact me in runescape items.

Waking up every day, eager to get the job done. Not depressing on a Sunday counting down the hours before getting back to your 9-5 job. The freedom of not having to accept any comments that you don’t agree with….all of these are worth more than money and can be very strong motivators.
