The Difference Between AdSense and AdWords
I know that to a lot of you this is going to be something that you fully understand, but I’m noticing that a lot of people at first don’t understand the difference between Google AdSense and Google AdWords. Let’s take a minute and go over the differences so you can better understand it if you need to.
Here is a summary of the difference from Google’s website:
For Advertisers: Google AdWords
- Advertise to people searching on Google and our advertising network
- Reach people actively looking for information about your products and services online
- Easily control costs - pay only when people click on your ad
For Site Owners: Google AdSense
- Maximize your site’s revenue potential with contextually targeted ads
- Customize ads to complement the look and feel of your site
- Track the success of different formats and locations with online reports
So basically, AdWords is an advertising program to create more exposure for your site. AdSense is a monetization technique that you can use to help your site generate some extra money. In the end they both should help with an income, but you don’t have to pay anything to place AdSense ads on your site.
I hope that clarifies this for those of you that weren’t sure about the difference. If not, please let me know!

You know what’s funny, I actually didn’t know myself until a friend of mine interviewed for Google in Europe. We made a study of all the advertising models that Google had at it’s disposal and this was the one “trick interview question” that still stumps him to this day.
Oh yeah, he didn’t get the job!

I was having dinner with a Google engineer last weekend and he didn’t know the difference between Adwords and Adsense. Shocking! He has been working there for 1.5 years on the indexing team.

Thank you. Simple and very informative. For ecommerce owners, it seems that both should be a part of the overall strategy.

Great post. My main problem with both of them is the account and payment set up. You can’t use adsense earnings for adwords. It would be so much better if you could. A great post and a great blog, keep the good work up.

Nice post a lot of people i speak with doesn’t know the difference.

Too bad that receiving adwords clicks cost a lot, while they reduced their payments out for adsense considerably for the same keywords, relatively. Adsense is how google brokers out their main source of income: adwords. I hope I didn’t just add to the confusion.
