Targeting Long Tail Keywords
Every now and then I come across an article that can say something just as well or better than I could. So why take all the time to write it out myself? Today is one of those days. A friend a colleague of mine, Brandon Buttars, sent me a link to an article from WordTracker about using long tail keywords in your marketing. This is something that I believe in as well, so I feel its fitting to share the article with you.
But let me summarize a bit about the concept. A long tail keyword is a keyword phrase that is more specific. Basically, if you have a website that sells weight loss products, we should already know through common sense that your best words to market to are NOT “weight loss”, “lose weight”, etc. There are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, they’re too competitive! Those words are so obvious that anybody in that industry could go for it. Secondly, you’ll get more window shoppers than actual buyers. When it comes to marketing, a big part of the game is finding those people that are actually in the mode to buy something. So who is more likely to buy: the person searching for ‘weight loss’, or the person searching for a specific product? Keep this in mind when you’re marketing your site.
