Overnight Success….

I don’t know what it is, but I’ve noticed that a lot of people get involved with starting a new internet business and expect that it is just going to be an overnight success just because it’s online. It’s almost like there is a magic URL out there that has an “Easy Button” that will make all of your wildest dreams come true. (If any of you have this URL, please send it my way ;-) )

Jeremy Schoemaker, the guy behind ShoeMoney.com, made a great little video a while back that I think illustrates his thoughts on this topic perfectly. Here’s the video.

Here’s something I think we all need to be reminded of from time to time: being successful in anything is going to take working at it. Whether its an online or offline venture, you’re still going to have to treat it like a business. You’re going to have to learn new things, try new things and see what happens, and as with most businesses you may lose a little money along the way. But keep going. If you keep going and keep working at it you’re going to get there. Don’t give up on what you’re trying to achieve.

Anyway, this is just something that I’ve been thinking about quite a bit over the last couple of weeks and thought I’d share the though here. Feel free to share any of your thoughts or comments as well!

I totally agree… I think most people think “online” means “easy”.. people don’t understand or recognize how much work online businesses require. I don’t think they “get it” until they’ve actually tried it themselves! Then they start to realize how much persistence, work, innovation and motivation it takes to be successful.

Great post! The Internet is just the latest “get rich quick” fad. People are always looking to make lots of money with minimal effort. It just doesn’t work that way.

Yes, you can make money online, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work 99.99% of the time. .01% you’ll get lucky, but who wants to take that chance…

Dave,

So true! I know that a lot of people are always looking for an easy way to the big money. The fact is, it takes work no matter what you decide to do. Thanks for the comment!

Wow, ain’t that the truth! Usually the people that are making the most money with the internet are also working the hardest - or have worked the hardest to get where they’re at.

It’s not an easy thing but totally pays off when you put in the time.

I agree, great post. Too many people think it’s a get-rich-quick scheme but I’m just now starting and realizing it’s a long-term commitment that you have to put hard work into constantly! I think more people should be aware of that, so thanks for writing about it.

Good post. I’ve tried to help many people make money online over the years. It’s a rare person who can stick to it long enough to start making decent money.

great, a captcha i can actually read! I think that most things of value take time and effort to achieve, i don’t believe in getting rich quick or easy money. Anything that promises overnight success is a scam imo.

I agree with all of your points, and think it’s something that should be discussed more. The Internet is not, on its own, a solution. It is a method for success that requires the same hardwork, albeit in non-traditional venues, to achieve profit. Just ask the dot.com boomers if it’s as easy as 1 - Website, 2 - ???, 3 - Profit
