Online Advertising Tips

I know it’s been a very long time since I’ve written, so if you can’t tell I’ll be adding to this blog on a rather sporadic nature. But I had an email come in the other day from Perry Marshall that I thought was very interesting and wanted to share some of his key points with you.

I know that a lot of people are very afraid of getting involved in pay per click advertising because they’re afraid they’ll lose money on it. Well, it’s one of the ways of doing advertising that you really should consider. And for a couple of reasons.

Here’s a quote from that email by Perry Marshall that I feel illustrates this point well:

I was in a meeting with Chris Cardell who is one of the best-known marketing consultants in the UK and he said, “Most of the online successes I have seen built their business on Google AdWords - not SEO, not social media, not YouTube videos, not blogging, not affiliate ventures. Google ads bring steady, reliable traffic day in and day out. It allows you to perfect your sales process, scientifically.”

Makes you think for a second doesn’t it? If it’s really that important, don’t you think it’s worth learning?

Later in his email Perry mentions his “Expanding Universe Theory” for online marketing. In other words, what are the things that you should be involved in as time goes on. As fas as I can tell, these are listed in order of importance according to Perry:

1. Google AdWords
2. Search Engine Optimization
3. Other PPC’s like Yahoo and MSN etc etc.
4. Email promotions
5. Affiliates
6. Press Releases
7. Direct Mail
8. Print Advertising

The fact is that you have to be doing different things to really market your site. It’s not the best idea to only focus on just one strategy. Start with PPC and SEO, then as time goes on add in other things to really market your business effectively. And that’s today’s online marketing tip!

The only issue I have with Google Adwords is that you have to have a serious amount of cash you are prepared to lose to learn it.

People may say that is not true but in certain niches it will be when you are paying $2 per click - This is what happened to me which is why I do not do these any more.

I thought these would make it to the list too. By joining relevant forums and post in there (with links in your signature) as well as using social networking sites like blogcatalog, digg etc to advertise is effective too and free.

What JBO said is very true, it takes soo much effort and money to learn effective Adwords advertising. I don’t agree totally with Perry Marshal though… adwords traffic quality and pricing have really taken a turn for the worse over the last year. Most people I know place SEO on that first spot, as organic traffic converts better. Adwords for specific campaigns, sure, but not for general traffic.

PPC Advertising AdviceSeptember 6th, 2008 at 8:07 am

I think SEO would be first on the list for the most effective form of online marketing (with the highest ROI) but PPC tends to be the driving force being businesses growing, especially when you consider that it takes many months for SEO efforts to start working.

I also agree that PPC can improve SEO score. I had try it out in my site for few months, it helps a lot.

I think the reason why people lose their money with PPC is because they don’t understand keyword analysis. You have to crawl before you walk and run. Experimenting with keywords when you’re doing SEO is part of that.

Adwords doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive imho. Setting up a bugget is key. If the cost is too high target a lower competition keyword.

Adwords is definitely helpful to promote a site.

Adwords is a good way to promote sites but recently some key words cost as much as $2 per click and it would cost me $200 to get a sale. I prefer to go for the cheaper SEO like articles submissions.

Adwords is a good idea. But you need to know how to do it right. I spent thousands of dollars and flushed a good deal of money down the toilet. You need to track who is clicking on your words. Its a good idea to use negatives, i.e. listing which words you don’t want to be affiliated with. You can also limit your Google Ad words campaign to regions, so that if your restaurant is in California, you don’t want someone in Arkansas clicking on your restaurant ad when they have no intention of getting on a plane to go to dinner.

SEO is essentially free (if you don;t count your time), but PPC budgets can really add up. The problem with PPC is that there ALWAYS seems to be someone willing to pay more than you are! SEO is a little more subversive - when its effects are noticed, it can be hard for competitors to catch up!

PPC Rocks! If you have the money

I like blog comments (also old post forum threads)… The key is to not make the moderator mad by spamming your anchor text as your name/signature. My suggestion is to insert a smiley into the comment text. You don’t get the anchor juice but there is still link juice. Use Firefox SEO plugin to find high PR blogs. Then submit ping/RSS after you get the URL. Don’t always use your main URL for 1/2 of these. Send them to your buffer sites as explained below. Also is good to put more than one smiley in with links to other high authority sites. This keeps google and your competitors guessing about what links are for what. Do the same thing in your own WH blog posts. :)

In my experience a lot of small business people use PPC because they don’t know how to do ongoing SEO, and don’t want to pay someone else to do it for them. They end up wasting a lot of money into PPC like Adwords because, as has been said before, there is a learning curve involved. Some never get to the top. In addition, they don’t do their homework ahead of time to even know if the ROI is there for their niche in the first place. And when they realize what is going on, they’ve spent a ton of money on PPC and still are on the bottom of the SEO learning curve.

Pay per click advertising works in many cases. It’s worth giving it a try at least, set a limit how much to spend on it though.

I would switch SEO and PPC in that list. PPC is fantastic, and can generate significant revenue; however, it’s not a long-term strategy. When the PPC $ dries up, so does your traffic (for the most part).

Also, as the first commenter mentioned, it’s an easy money pit. If your conversion rates are not where they should be, you’ll quickly lose money. We should all know it by now, but there’s is no magic bullet, PPC included.

PPC & SEO are not mutually exclusive and should work together as part of a combined strategy. I tend to find that the ppc ads send different traffic from the organic results. People who are aware they are adverts tend to skip the paid results and click on the organic results, however, the 50% of internet users who have never heard of an adword will still probably click on the ads at the top. Combine PPC and SEO and you will have a winning strategy!

Online advertising has proven to be very effective in propagating and disseminating information all throughout the world, via the World Wide Web. It may be a bit difficult sometimes, but I agree, that you should not limit yourself and be too engrossed with one advertising strategy, maximize the probabilities and the chances of getting noticed.

There are so many ways to advertise and market a business. You can spend a lot and see the results in an instant but doesn’t guarantee to be permanent. or you may prefer to do organic advertising and marketing which results may take awhile but will be permanent.
