More Plugins and Addons Listed
I realized that it has been awhile since I’ve updated my Plugins page. If you haven’t been to this page before, it’s a list of useful WordPress and FireFox plugins that I use and a brief description of what they do.
Plugins/Addons (depending on your preferred terminology) are one of the best things about FireFox and WordPress. This handy little programs will make your experience with these programs so much better because they allow you to truely customize what you’re doing.
You’ll want to be careful not to use too many FireFox addons though, since if you add too many it can really slow down your browser. Also, if you use too many JavaScript plugins you can really slow down the load time of your blog as well.
Here are some of the new ones that have been added to the page:
FireFox Plugins
FireGestures
This is another gestures program. I’m using this on my laptop and Mouse Gestures on a desktop, but as time goes on I think I’m liking FireGestures more than Mouse Gestures. Same basic idea though.
FireBug
I’ve grown to really love this plugin. It let’s you hover over a page and see what the different divs are so you can then go into the code and make the changes to the CSS and HTML to make your site look the way you want. I use this plugin all the time when i’m customizing a site.
TwitterFox
TwitterFox let’s you manage your Twitter account from a little pop-up box in your browser. You can also change back and forth between accounts if you have different ones. It will keep track of your most recent updates, replies, and direct messages. Great if you’re a Twitter user!
RankChecker
Another great tool from SEOBook.com. This one will let you type in a domain and a keyword and tell you where that site ranks for that phrase on Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. You can also save lists of keywords that you check frequently.
SearchStatus
This one will let you see the Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, and/or Compete Rank as a small button rather than using the Google Toolbar, Alexa Toolbar, etc. I just use it for PageRank rather than using the full Google Toolbar.
WordPress Plugins
WordPress Thread Comment
I LOVE this plugin! I only started using it a few weeks ago, but what it allows you to do is reply to someone else’s comment and the reply stays inside the original comment. Great for conversations. It will also email the reply to the person you commented back to if you want it to, thus getting rid of the need for the Comment Email Responder plugin. It seems though that some themes don’t work well with this one.
TwitterTools
This will make it so that you can show your most recent Twitter updates on your sidebar. You can also set it up so that when you write a new post it is automatically sent to Twitter.
Apture
I love Apture! Apture is a plugin that allows you to add extra multimedia to your website from places like Flickr, YouTube, etc. by just highlighting words on the page and inserting the link. It’s all Javascript, but pretty darn cool. Check out their site for a demo of how it works.
Ad Rotator
This is a very simple plugin that will let you set up rotating ads where ever you insert it.
Exec-PHP
This is more of an advanced plugin, but can be really useful if you need to do some more advanced things with your blog. This plugin will make it so that you can actually use PHP code in your posts, which is something that the normal WordPress editors will not let you do. But use with caution!
Lijit
Lijit is a more advanced search feature for your blog. It allows people to not only search your blog, but also your social networks and sites you’ve bookmarked on places like delicious and StumbleUpon as well.
Be sure to checkout the Plugins page for other plugins that were added in the past but are still good to use. Also, let me know if you have any ideas of other great plugins that I should be trying!

Yes it is right that using more add ons or updating plugins page may slow down the performance of the system. To prevent this problem one should install only that plugins which are essential .

I agree. There are lots of ‘cool’ little things you can do with plugins, but if it slows things down too much it’s not worth it!

I love firebug and twitterfox, but I’d not heard of rankchecker before. I’m going to get it and install. Sounds like its something I’d use every day. Cheers.

I love firebug and twitterfox too. RankChecker really comes in handy when you’re checking rankings. Much better than just going through them on your own.

For Wordpress, I’d add the automatic upgrade plugin, makes upgrading Wordpress a breeze. Click a few buttons and it’s done.

I think the most recent version of WP does that automatically. Or is this a different plugin?

I’d have to agree with Rank Checker being the best tool - Aaron Wall over at SEO Book does have a lot of very helpful tools.

Thanks a lot, I loved the “ad rotator” addon. So simple to set up that it is silly.

Do you have a link for that one?

Wordpress thread comment plugin is what I have been looking for. Can you recommend a plugin that will automatically trim posts. I have several WP blogs and a Drupal blog. With Drupal you can set the size of the post to publish and it will automatically trim it with a ‘read more’ statement.
Any ideas for a WordPress plugin to do the same?

I haven’t heard of any that do that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was something like that. Have you checked the WordPress.org site?

Hi Dan - I have tried to check WP.org - their search function is not terribly good. Type in ‘trim post’ and you get everything but. I will keep looking. I know there is a plugin but it relies on hard coding within the index.plp file as well. I should follow that up.
cheers

Let me know if you find anything, I’d be interested to see it!
I do use a lot Search Status and I love it. I discovered another add-on for Firefox - GreaseMonkey for Google, which allows you to customize the way a web page appears; I use it to make a very fast ranking check, as it could download more than 100 results in search page results.

You dont really need the Exec-PHP plugin for wordpress anymore when you use the latest versions of wordpress.
I have no problem in attaching php code or html in wordpress 2.6 or higher.
This will save you having to install another plugin and complicate your wordpress install.

I’ll have to try that sometime. My understanding has always been that for security reasons they took out any PHP functionality from the wysiwyg editor.

i miss “Flagfox” and “GA?” on this list!

TwitterFox is a great one for saving some time and for keeping clutter off your screen. And yes, the most recent version of WP does the ranking results automatically now.

also there are lots of good SEO plugins available for Firefox.

Thanks for the list! You can add Moztrans to your Firefox list. That’s a translation add-on, very useful http://home.interlecta.com/desktop or use the page for firefox add-ons but you need to look in the section for experimental add-ons.

A few of those plug-ins I mostly use on WP. Thanks for giving me additional information on adding some important plug-ins on WP.
I’ll explore and see more of these plug-ins!
