Is Overture’s Inventory Tool Dead?

From the looks of it, yes! Granted, they have been on the death bed for several months now, only showing keyword results from January. So in some senses this is probably a good thing.

Before you start worrying about what you’re going to do without the Overture tool, let me give you some other options. One that I use a lot is the WordTracker Free Keywords Tool. This tool gives you an average daily number rather than a monthly number, so make sure you take that into account.

You can also use the regular WordTracker tool, which will give you some other calculations. This tool is a subscription tool, but you can do free trials on it.

Rumor has it that Yahoo! is going to be introducing a new tool in the future but who knows when that will be. So don’t let this be your excuse to not do any keyword research. Find other tools and get it done!

you know i have been wondering about this, as recently i hasnt been working for me. i normally used the keyword selector tool and it was no longer showing any results, i thought maybe they banned my ip so i went to overture and still the same, no results. luckily i found the free wordtracker tool, which is great, dont know what i would do without the wordtracker tool as even keyword elite wasnt giving me any results!

I think a lot of people are going to find that their keyword tools aren’t working, because so many of the keyword tools out there have always relied on Overture for their numbers. So it will be interesting to see if anything new comes out because of this.

Hey Ventrilo,

I’ve noticed this as well. It seems to go up and down lately, so I’ll be sticking with WordTracker for now.

Ive found that the free wordtracker tool is a pretty good replacement, but when I just need an idea for search volume (especially if Im comparing keywords), Ill use google trends at http://www.google.com/trends.
If you know how much search traffic one keyword gets (one you rank well in, for example), you can use that as a baseline to compare other keywords against (in google trends).
In the end though, I dont trust the wordtracker numbers as much as I did the overture numbers, so hopefully yahoo will come out with something soon.

Peter,
I like the trends tool as well, but I also wish that Google would give out numbers so we knew what to compare it against. I heard a rumor once that Yahoo! was going to put out another tool down the road, but I haven’t found anything to back it up.

I still think that running an adwords campaign (to test traffic/conversion) is the best way to see what kind of traffic a keyword / keyprases have. These free tools are nice but they don’t give you the real data you need.

I prefer using WordTracker tool than Overture since it’s easy to use and the outcome data is more reliable.

I like to use Google adwords to get keyword ideas, and to get an idea of the traffic a keyword has. And then compare that with other keywords.
I rarely use the WordTracker tool or Overture…

Daan.

Yes the tool is dead. The best free tool around now is probably http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/ from seo book. Give it a try..

Yea I have been wondering what happened to overture.. and I am still waiting for Yahoo to come up with an interesting tool.. I hope they give good results and not the stale ones like Overture did.. (jan result).. yea wordtracker is a better tool.. yet the 7 days trial thing is not enuff as the keyword has to be researched frequently.. I am lucky though that I use IBP tool and they give wordtracker for free.. or say included in their services.. (I am not endorsing IBP)..

I prefer to use the keyword tool that Google provides through the AdWords tool. I’m very surprised that Yahoo hasn’t revived the Overture tool. It was by far the most popular keyword tool for a long time, and when they bought Overture they just let it die. Bad move…

The Overture keyword tool has been dead for some time now. Google Adwords keyword tool is probably the best and most accurate one around now aside from wordtracker.
