Doing Things Daily Leads to Success
Have you ever started a project, and then after a week you get bored of it and only come back to it once every couple of months? I think that we are all guilty of this from time to time. Whether it’s building a model, learning a new hobby, or whatever, we all know that this is not the best way to learn how to do something or to become good at it.
The sad thing is that this is how some of us will approach starting a new online business. Let me give you an example:
So you get all excited about your new online venture, and for the first couple of weeks you are working on it pretty good. You’re starting to get the site built, or maybe you have it built and you’re in the initial stages of marketing. Then something comes up. Maybe you have to put in more time at work. Maybe one of the kids gets sick. Whatever it is, something comes along and takes your time. And before you know it, you haven’t worked on your site for about two weeks.
Here’s the thing: things will come up in life. Heck, things come up in my life all the time. But if you had a business that was doing well and you left it for two weeks, what would happen? Personally, I don’t think any of us would leave it alone for that long if we know that it was making money! But have you noticed that it’s so much easier to do that when we’re just getting started?
So here’s what I want all of you (and myself at times
) to consider: how do you expect the site to be a good, successful business if you don’t work it like it already is one?
If you want your site to become a success, you’re going to have to work at it. Otherwise you won’t be able to handle it when it does!

This is very true as it seems to fit my current situation very well. I’m finding it difficult to stay focussed on assignments that my mentor is giving to me and haven’t even built a site yet. I guess the reason is that I’m retired and don’t think I have enough money available to attempt or have enough confidence in myself to set up a site even though I have products in mind to sell. I can however, see that home business is going to take steady input on a daily basis to get anything out of it. I definately have the time but other things keep getting in the way. I manage to spent at least three hours each day reading and trying to get new ideas but they don’t come easy. Thanks for letting me post here.

The key to motivation is consitency. Motivation actually creates energy and consitent energy creates momentum. I used to wait to feel motivated before I did something, now I do something and it motivates me.

This is very true; I found myself working day and night on my website and became more and more motivated the more I worked on it…i let it slack for a month or two and its hard to get all cylinders firing again to recapture that initial surge. Doing it daily is really sound advice

It is easier to slack off on a project before you have the momentum going. Seeing a project’s success is part of the motivation, so prior to the success, it’s definitely easy to shoot yourself in the foot by not working on it daily!

I have a huge calendar stuck on my wall which I add/update things on hourly basis.
It is the best for tracking your goals and see how close yo are to reach them

This is very true Dan. It’s easy to become sidetracked when starting a business… life has a habit of ‘happening’. Another thing I find that happens is that we have too many good ideas and end up spreading our time too thinly. The best advice I can give on this is to keep our main focus on ONE project. If or when you become ‘information overloaded’ on that project, you can then focus attention for a few hours on another project just to break the monotony and give you a fresh perspective when you return to your main project the following day. I would advise never going more than two days without doing something with your main project… even if it’s just to check the traffic reports.

I become obsessed with things whether they’re new projects, learning a language or building something. This fire burns bright and intense for a short period of time, and during this time this obsession is all I can think about. Then one day I’ll wake up and the feeling is gone just like that, and I’ve moved on to something else.
One thing that seems to help extend the life of a project is, including others. When someone else is involved I find myself working for someone other than just me. This makes the consequences of failure more severe. In this way I’m less likely to abandon a project or undertaking.

What you’re saying is too true; Projects at my real job can’t just be cast by the wayside. But, when i get home and am deciding on working on my personal site as a little side income, it is so much easier to just put it off until ‘tomorrow’. you need to buckle down and put in at least a little bit of time everyday, especially in the initial start up period.

So true, I was reading an article in CNN’s Business 2.0 about this… It talked about not just dreaming but actually putting effort towards goals you build. I’ll see if I can find it… would be great reading for others…

I will move on new things as I feel it’s no worth to keep on ,I don’t know if this right or not.

the key is how motivated and consistent you are.at first it seems like you are talking to yourself if you pass on that phase then you are headed for success

That’s exactly what I experienced during the late stretch of 2007. I was planning on conjuring up my own travelogue website. But I succumbed to pressures at work, and some unnecessary commitments (online gaming, anyone?). But yes, I totally agree that a daily (or regular) updating of your online business will be the primary key to success. The best way to fast-track the site’s success is to quit your job, but that will entail some risks.

You are spot on, daily effort will lead to success. Loosing focus will lead to bad results.
