Be More Aware of Chargebacks

If you run an online business that involves processing credit cards, you need to be aware of what is involved in getting chargebacks. To put it simply, a chargeback is when a customer decides for some reason that they did not authorize a charge on their card. This is bad for you as a business owner to say the least!

I think this is an area that a lot of online merchants (whether you’re doing dropshipping or wholesaling or even selling your own ebook) are not fully aware of. You see, if you get a chargeback you will lose your product or service to that customer, and if you get to many of them you run the risk of having your merchant account revoked. Not good no matter how you look at it!

Well, I came across a chargeback e-book the other day that will teach you how to avoid the problems with chargebacks. The fact is that chargebacks to ecommerce companies is on the rise, and you need a chargeback guide to help you navigate these waters!

In fact, did you know that in a chargeback it is the consumer’s bank that determines the outcome of the chargeback? Not you, not your bank, not your merchant account, the consumer’s bank!

This official chargeback e-book is becoming the standard when it comes to handling chargebacks. With the book and their chargeback tutorial, you will be well equipped to deal with any chargebacks that come your way. And the book is only $19.95! Anyway, it’s something you really should consider picking up if you’re going to be processing orders online.

Yes I am totally with you here. I regularly get attempted fraud on my site and that is for selling high value goods. If I do not spot it is fraud I have to pay the full price for the item.

I got stung when I first started as I didn’t realise - many others could get stung like this too - not so bad with an ebook - worst that can happen is you get your merchant account taken but physical goods? - makes me sick.

Frequently charge backs are the result of fraud. Some people will use stolen credit cards and have an item shipped to the address of an empty or abandoned house. You also need to scrutinize international shipments because there is virtually no recourse in the event of fraud and charge backs.

When most people start an ebusiness that sells something, I think they mainly focus on the income. This is definitely a problem that you should be aware of. Besides, that’s crazy that it is the customers bank that determines the amount!

This is some great advice. I got caught out by this when I started an online rental management company. It happened a couple of times when customers put in chargebacks for no valid reason so I still had to payout the rent to the landlords. It can be very costly.

Yeah I had the same problem, I spoke to my web design company about it and they implemented something on my system to reduce this and it worked, otherwise it was costing me a fortune

Thank you to bringing this to light for merchants. I first became aware of charge backs when my friend owned a video store. Customers would claim they did not rent and the charge was bogus. These were $4 - 5 purchases and they added up, but it could be worse if it is a higher amount and you lose the product.

It’s so true that scamming on the internet is on the rise, what can you do about it honestly… My advice if your a seller, stay away from eBay unless your really already good with computers and the internet.

Good information to share. Chargebacks can actually be quite crushing, and the amounts can be huge sometimes. We’ve fought quite a few of them - people “forget” that they’ve ordered, etc. Whoever makes the decision, they seem to be quite logical, as the decisions are normally in our favor. That said, it is an added workflow burden that none of us need!

Sounds very interesting but does it cover Paypal chargebacks? My understanding is if a credit card purchase is made through Paypal, it’s Paypal that has the final say, not the credit card company. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong please.

Argh, chargebacks are not fun. I’ve been dealing with one at Paypal for several months now. Fortunately, they don’t come around too often.

Thats great point to get the charge back in the process. I will surely take care of it. for some days before this was very costly, as I put in chargebacks for no valid reason so I still had to payout the rent to the landlords. But now its cool to get it at low cost. thnx

Glad you posted about this - it’s definitely an emerging issue.

I’m also aware of a growing trend of consumers who use chargebacks for customer service issues, as opposed to unauthorised charges. The first step should always be to talk to the seller and try to sort things out.
